What is an MCP backend, and when does your product need one?
Model Context Protocol lets AI assistants use your product's data and actions safely. A plain-English explanation for founders and product teams.
If people now ask an AI assistant to “book me a ticket” or “find last month’s invoices”, your product may need to speak to those assistants. That is what the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is for.
The short version
MCP is an open standard that lets an AI assistant discover what your system can do and call it in a controlled way. Instead of the assistant guessing how to use your website, your backend publishes a menu: these are the actions you can take, these are the things you can read, and this is what each one needs.
What goes in the menu
- Tools: actions, such as “create a booking” or “cancel an order”.
- Resources: data the assistant can read, such as a customer’s recent orders.
- Prompts: ready-made starting points for common tasks.
Why not just use your API?
You can, and your REST API should stay. But a normal API assumes a human developer read the documentation. An MCP server describes itself in a form the assistant can understand, so it needs no custom integration for each AI product.
Security matters more, not less
An assistant acting for a user must have only that user’s permissions. The safe pattern is to put the same authentication, roles and validation in front of MCP that protect your REST API, and to share the business logic so the two never drift apart. Every tool should check who is calling before it does anything.
When it makes sense
An MCP backend is worth building when your product has clear actions people would delegate (booking, searching, reporting) and your users already work with AI assistants. If you only have a brochure website, you don’t need one.
When it doesn’t
If your data is sensitive and you don’t yet have solid roles and audit logs, fix those first. An assistant makes weak access control more visible, not safer.
